The Pickering Barn Garden in Issaquah is a community learning garden that demonstrates organic food growing techniques, promotes healthy soil building, resource conservation and eco-friendly gardening practices. The green roofs and rain barrels on site are examples of sustainable living in urban landscapes.
As a Garden Steward for Seattle Tilth, I have been deeply involved in the expansion of this community garden. Over the past few months, the garden has undergone a face-lift in an effort renew the garden with annual vegetable beds, perennial edibles, native plant beds, wildlife habitat areas, wetland areas, and on-site composting.
The Seattle Tilth team has worked with volunteers from the Issaquah community, the Washington Conservation Corps, EOS Alliance, Seattle Works and several local schools to achieve this transformation. During one of the ‘work’ days, I was interviewed by members of the EOS team. Here is the video recording –
The energetic and environment conscious volunteers of EOS have shown great enthusiasm and commitment in helping Seattle Tilth expand this garden.
The vegetable beds are now ready for planting. Spring is round the corner!! Come and visit Pickering Barn. Volunteer and learn to garden organically and sustainably.
